What is the fastest insect on Earth?

We all know the fastest animal in the world is the cheetah, however, not many know the fastest insect. One scientist named Thomas Merritt set out in 1999 to discover the fastest-running insect in the world. There were a couple of conditions for the experiment, including timing the speed of the insect at least five times. Believe it or not, the winner of the experiment was the American Cockroach. In second place was the Australian Tiger Beetle, at 4.2 mph.

The American Cockroach 

The American Cockroach can run 5 feet in one second, which equals a speed of 3.4 mph. The speed of these insects can be concerning, especially if you spot one in your home or business. American Cockroaches can be identified by their 2 inch long bodies that are reddish-brown. 

Different Types of Cockroaches

There are three different types of cockroaches found in the United States. These include the American Cockroach, the Oriental Cockroach, and the German Cockroach. Overall, American Cockroaches are larger than both German and Oriental Cockroaches. Oriental Cockroaches are about 1 inch in length. German Cockroaches are the smallest, ranging from ½ to ⅝ inches in length. 

Behavior of Cockroaches 

As far as common behaviors and habitats of cockroaches, each type of cockroach tends to prefer a different type of climate. American Cockroaches are typically found in warm and damp environments such as in sewers, kitchens, and basements. German Cockroaches also prefer warm and damp environments, but tend to stay close to food sources as well. Alternatively, Oriental Cockroaches inhabit cooler and amp areas including drains, crawl spaces, and basements.
