Ant pest control: Why it’s important to identify the species

Ant Pest ControlAnts are a particularly frustrating pest.  Seemingly overnight, they can appear in large numbers in your home, and are difficult to control.  There are also multiple species of ants, and each species has its own patterns of foraging, nesting, and multiplying.  A common mistake in dealing with ants is to approach them with a one-size-fits-all pest control strategy that doesn’t take into account important differences between the ant types.

Effective ant pest control will zero in on the specific species you have to deal with.  Knowing the species will give you important clues about the source of the infestation, what kinds of environments the ants might prefer at different times of the year, the way they look for food, and the food they like.

Just in terms of identifying likely nest sites, there are important variations to account for between species.  For example, elongate twig ants, which can sting you defensively, prefer nesting in hollow twigs and dry grasses.  Pavement ants can establish nests under the sidewalk in front of your home, but sometimes also comfortably move into your home and set up their nest beneath your floorboards or in your walls.  Odorous house ants, which give off an unpleasant smell when they’re stepped on, like damp, warm places, which means they might set up their nest in a mulchy area on your property or within your floor or walls, particularly if they find an inviting pocket of moisture.

There are, of course, some general ways that you can try to prevent an ant infestation or attempt to curb it.  Putting food away in sealed containers and not leaving food out for too long, including in your pet’s dish, are important measures.  Dealing with plumbing issues that might be creating moist, dark and warm places favored by certain species of ants is also important.  You can also try to find any obvious cracks leading into your home that need to be sealed up.

But one frustrating quality common to many ants, is that they’ll appear in homes that don’t have obvious problems.  Your home could be quite clean and tidy, with no other pest infestation, and they might still show up.  Your best bet then, is to call on the services of pest control experts.
