WESH-TV (FL): Report: Children Attacked By Yellow Jackets

REDDICK, Fla. — Five children between the ages of 4 and 15 years old were hospitalized Tuesday because of yellow jacket stings.

Deonte Jackson, a 19-year-old relative of the children, said the children, who are all cousins, were playing in the woods behind a home.

All of a sudden, the children began running to a nearby house. When they came inside, Jackson said their shirts and upper bodies were covered with yellow jackets.

More of the stinging insects followed the children inside the home. Adults in the home stripped the children of their clothing and sprayed them with bug spray.

Despite their efforts, including stomping on the insects, the yellow jackets continued to sting the children.

Jackson said a 6-year-old girl and a 4- or 5-year-old boy suffered the most serious stings.

Firefighters responded and took the children to Munroe Regional Medical Center.

Marion County Fire Department spokeswoman Miranda Iglesias said the two younger children were stung at least 30 times each.

More yellow jackets were seen later swarming around a hole about 1 1/2 feet wide.
