When dealing with a home tick treatment, it’s best to treat both the dog and the surrounding areas. Ticks are easiest to spot after they’ve fed on Fido – and it’s no coincidence that American Dog Ticks are one of the most common ticks found in South Florida homes. Ticks may grow almost four times their natural size when engorged with blood from you or your pet. Where do you typically find ticks on pets? Anywhere, but ticks tend to move towards your pet’s head, so closely examine the area around your pet’s head and ears.

Home Treatment for Dogs and People

As we like to say at Hulett, prevention works a lot better than fighting an infestation. Whether you treat your pets with topical or oral tick treatments, the best way to guard against ticks starts with protecting your pets from ticks. Additionally, wash your pet’s bedding and toys frequently to prevent future infestations and check your pets regularly for ticks. If you find a tick on your pet, use rubber gloves to avoid touching the tick while you remove it with tweezers. Pull straight upward, in order to prevent parts of the tick remaining in your pet’s flesh.

Home remedies using essential oils and everyday items, such as apple cider vinegar, are making inroads in the fight against ticks and fleas. Most ticks need about 1-2 days (24-48 hours) before they can transmit infection, so it’s very important to also check yourself for ticks after being outdoors. Check hair and skin, all over.

Wear light-colored long pants and long-sleeved shirts when going outside to make dark ticks easy to spot. Opt for closed-toed sneakers or boots instead of flip-flops or sandals. Tuck your pants leg into the top of your boot or sock, in tick prone areas. Don’t forget to use bug repellent. Most importantly, if you suspect that a tick has bitten you or if you’re experiencing symptoms, such as fever, pain in the joints, or a painful rash, seek medical attention right away.

Yard Treatment

If you suspect that the ticks came from your yard, there are several ways you can prevent them. Cut the grass low and make sure that all weeds are removed. Woodpiles and garbage also attract ticks so keep your yard neat and clean.
